Materials and legibility
Why tungsten carbide, and what does the dial hide?
The production watch pairs a dark tungsten-carbide exterior with polished tantalum details. These are two different materials, not two finishes on the same metal. The sandblasted surfaces and polished elements create the contrast described in the manufacturer’s specification.
Hardness does not make a watch immune to damage. Do not treat marketing language about durability as a guarantee against impact, scratches or a damaged bracelet. Before buying a worn example, ask a qualified inspector to examine the case edges, links, clasp and any signs of repair. Confirm available service options before assuming a marked part can simply be polished.
The dial is anthracite Grand Feu enamel on white gold. Its polished surface and matte numerals change their contrast with the light. That is the point of the “furtif”, or stealthy, design: the information can become clearer when the wearer tilts the watch. It is not a hidden electronic display.
A listing photograph is a poor test of how this dial reads on the wrist. Ask for unfiltered views from several angles and inspect the watch in normal lighting. Do not diagnose a damaged or incorrect dial from a single reflection. Les Cadraniers de Genève and Les Boîtiers de Genève are the manufacturer’s dial and case specialists named for the model.
Hand-wound architecture
Calibre 1522: a new layout for F.P. Journe
Calibre 1522 is manually wound. The manufacturer describes its nearly linear gear train as a first for the brand, with the central seconds hand fitted directly to its dedicated wheel. The movement is rose gold and runs at 3 Hz. It is distinct from both the automatic Octa platform and the Centigraphe chronograph movement.
The rear displays are useful to an owner even though they are absent from the front. The reserve indicates when winding is needed, and the moon-phase window sits opposite it. Removing the watch to read those displays is part of the design, not evidence that it is a simple three-hand movement without further indications.
Use the correct manual for winding and setting. A reference chart can identify the expected calibre; it cannot establish the internal condition of a particular watch. An inspection should assess operation, rate and reserve, and note any limits on what could be checked without further service.

The unique Furtif Bleu established the idea of a discreet enamel dial and a new movement with central seconds and rear indications. The production CF carries the concept forward but changes the principal exterior material and dial color. They share calibre 1522; they are not the same reference in two ordinary color options.
The manufacturer records a CHF 2,000,000 result for the unique CFB at Only Watch. The charity auction took place in Geneva on 10 May 2024, in support of research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy. What does the Chronomètre Furtif cost?
PAA’s historical price list records a reported 2025 launch price of CHF 85,000 before tax. Its office review date is 12 August 2026. This is not a boutique quotation verified on the publication date of this guide, and it says nothing about availability to a particular buyer.

What a Furtif owner or buyer should check
- Reference and exterior. Establish CF rather than CFB, and match the case number to the guarantee and service records. A dark photograph does not identify the material.
- Dial condition. Review the enamel and changing reflections in person. Record any chips, marks or reported replacement rather than assuming every unusual reflection is a defect.
- Bracelet and clasp. Check fit, spare links, articulation and clasp security. Confirm the proper material combination and any replacement parts.
- Operation and records. Have a qualified watchmaker review winding, time display, rear indications and condition. Obtain the scope and limits in writing.
- Ownership and transfer. Confirm the counterparty’s authority to sell and agree inspection, insurance, payment and release conditions before moving the watch or money.
The authentication checklist is a preparation tool, not a remote certificate. A photograph cannot establish legal ownership, internal condition or the absence of every replacement part.
