Birkin bag prices: retail, resale and what drives the premium
Sotheby’s reported US Togo Birkin retail of $13,500 for a 25, $14,900 for a 30 and $16,300 for a 35 on 27 January 2026. Passion Asset Advisory compares those dated references with the publisher’s resale context. The figures are not current boutique offers, audited individual sales or the amount an owner receives after costs.

Birkin price index: retail by size and resale context
A dated reference table, not a statistical investment index. The Sotheby's report of January 27, 2026 is the source for the figures below. These are reported US boutique prices and that seller's marketplace observations, not an official Hermès offer or an independently audited transaction dataset.
| Size | Reported US retail, Jan 2026 | Source's prior US reference | Change from that reference | Published resale context |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birkin 25 | $13,500 | $12,700 · May 2025 | About +6.3% | $28,000–$30,000 for pristine Togo examples |
| Birkin 30 | $14,900 | $13,900 · May 2025 | About +7.2% | $28,000–$30,000 for pristine Togo examples |
| Birkin 35 | $16,300 | No matched prior figure used here | Not calculated | No verified size-specific band used here |
Source: Passion Asset Advisory compiles the linked Sotheby’s report of January 27, 2026. The percentage changes use the post-May-2025 US references, not January 2025 prices. Resale bands describe selected condition/specification groups in the source; they are not audited individual sale results, an asking-price average or a guaranteed achievable price. Taxes and transaction costs require separate checks.
Why are retail, asking and completed prices different?
Hermès says Birkin, Kelly and Constance bags are sold in its stores. Availability is separate from price. A published retail reference does not create an allocation, waitlist position or delivery promise.
- Retail: the boutique's price for the offered bag, market and date.
- Asking price: what a resale seller requests. It is not proof that a buyer paid it.
- Completed sale: an evidenced transaction. Check the date, condition, currency and whether buyer's premium is included.
- Owner net: what remains after seller fees and agreed costs. A buyer's auction total is not the seller's proceeds.

Six details needed to price a specific Birkin
- Size and construction: match the bag's measurements and construction, not the name alone.
- Leather: identify the material and finish; do not apply a Togo comparison to an exotic. See the Hermès leather guide.
- Colour: compare the exact shade and combination, including special-order contrasts.
- Hardware: record finish, wear and any special or diamond-set treatment.
- Condition: inspect corners, handles, interior, odour, shape, repairs and recolouring.
- Documentation and accessories: check provenance, date marks, receipt where available, lock, keys, clochette, dust bag and box.
No fixed percentage captures all six. A receipt or complete set does not authenticate a bag by itself, and condition descriptions must be checked against the physical item.
Exotic leathers and record Birkins
Exotic leathers cost several times more and are priced case by case. Species, finish, condition, hardware and documentation can make two superficially similar bags poor comparisons. Cross-border sale may also require specialist checks on the applicable wildlife-trade documentation.
Jane Birkin's original bag and exceptional diamond-hardware examples belong to a different evidence group from standard production Togo bags. See the dated Birkin auction records and the rare Hermès guide. A record result is not a valuation benchmark for every Birkin.
Buying, selling and the cost of holding
For a purchase, check the seller, authenticity, condition, payment terms and return rights before committing. For a sale, compare an actual written offer with a written consignment or private-sale estimate after all fees. No route always gives the highest net result.
Retail increases do not guarantee resale gains. Acquisition premiums, commissions, tax, storage, insurance, wear and time to sell can turn a higher gross resale price into a loss. The Birkin investment guide and Birkin value calculator provide planning context, not an offer or guaranteed return.
This guide does not establish an active sourcing or sale service. The bag-buying checklist and bag-sale comparison describe the roles, costs and verification terms a buyer or seller should examine.
How Passion Asset Advisory compiles Birkin references
Reviewed September 27, 2026. Price data comes from the dated Sotheby's report linked above; boutique availability is checked against Hermès' own FAQ. This snapshot is not a live stock or price feed. The compilation does not independently audit the source's completed sales. Compare the Kelly references and Chanel references. Editorial policy.
FAQ
Birkin pricing questions
Are the table's retail prices an offer from Hermès?
No. Passion Asset Advisory reproduces US price references reported by Sotheby's on January 27, 2026. The boutique's current quote and availability control an actual purchase. A published price does not guarantee access to a bag.
Is the resale band what I will receive for my Birkin?
No. The band is a source's marketplace context for a defined group of bags. Your price depends on the exact item and condition, and your net proceeds are reduced by the fees and costs in the sale agreement.
Can I use a listing as a completed-sale comparable?
No. A listing records an asking price. A completed-sale comparison needs evidence of the transaction and its date, currency, condition and fee basis. A disappeared listing alone does not prove the final price.
Do exotic Birkins have one starting price?
No single exotic starting price is used here. Species, finish, size, hardware, condition and documentation differ. Exotic leathers cost several times more and require case-by-case pricing.
Does a Birkin guarantee an investment return?
No. Resale demand, condition and transaction costs can change the outcome. A rise in the price of a new bag is not the return an owner earns after buying, holding and selling a used one.
Does a private purchase provide a boutique allocation?
No. A secondary-market purchase and a boutique allocation are different routes. This guide promises neither an allocation nor a delivery date; confirm the exact bag, seller, verification and terms before committing.
