F.P. Journe Vagabondage: the trilogy, edition by edition

By Passion Asset Advisory · Published · Updated .

Passion Asset Advisory finding: Vagabondage is F.P. Journe’s hand-wound series in the Flat Tortue case. The first model has a wandering hour window; the second shows digital hours and minutes; the third adds jumping digital seconds. The main platinum editions number 69 each, with 68-piece gold editions for II and III. The 2022 I Gold uses the updated calibre 1504.2.

Identify the edition, metal and full limited-series number before discussing value. The same numeral across I, II and III can form a matching set, but that relationship must be documented. The two auction examples below are dated individual sales, not a universal 2026 range.

The manufacturer’s own historical descriptions differ on the first commercial series date. Its April 2022 retrospective labels I as 2004; the older Vagabondage III archive describes I as launched in 2006. This guide shows that discrepancy rather than turning a single year into an authentication rule. Production, introduction and delivery should also be kept separate.

The curved Flat Tortue case and unsigned dial distinguish the series from the usual round F.P. Journe watch. The absence of the brand name on the dial is deliberate. It is not, by itself, evidence of a counterfeit.

Reading Vagabondage I

How the wandering hour works

The hour appears as a number inside a moving aperture. As that aperture travels around the minute scale, its position tells the minutes. At the hour change the number advances. Read both the number and its position; it is not the same display as a central hour hand beside a separate digital window.

Vagabondage II changes the idea: hours and minutes are read digitally, with small seconds on a separate display. Vagabondage III uses a digital hour display and digital seconds but keeps a central minute hand. “Digital” here means mechanically displayed numerals, not an electronic movement.

The 2022 I Gold revisits the wandering-hour design with calibre 1504.2. It is not merely the old platinum watch recased in gold. The manufacturer describes an updated movement, and its reference should appear correctly in any inspection or valuation file.

Vagabondage I / calibre 1504, Vagabondage II / calibre 1509 and I Gold / calibre 1504.2.

Vagabondage III

Why the jumping seconds matter

The third edition advances a numerical seconds display once each second. Moving discs through repeated jumps creates a different energy demand from driving a slender seconds hand. The manufacturer describes a one-second constant-force mechanism, or remontoir d’égalité, to manage that demand in calibre 1514.

The display combines an hour window, the digital seconds near 6 o’clock and a central minute hand. The manufacturer presents it as the first wristwatch with this full digital jumping-seconds display. That is a claim about the display mechanism, not a promise that an individual used example remains fault-free.

For an inspection, correct jumps matter, but a video alone is insufficient. Ask a qualified watchmaker to examine the display operation, the constant-force mechanism as the agreed scope permits, rate, reserve and service needs. Do not repeatedly force the hands or displays to demonstrate a jump.

Provenance and sets

Matching serial numbers

F.P. Journe offered existing Vagabondage owners priority for later watches carrying the same limited-series number. As a result, an owner may hold I, II and III with matching numbers. The 2022 gold release also gave priority to owners completing the gold trilogy.

A matching set is a provenance claim that requires evidence. Record each watch’s full case number, metal, guarantee and ownership history. Similar numerals in advertisements are not enough. Ask whether a set is being sold together, whether any member has changed hands separately and whether its documentation supports the relationship.

There is no universal percentage to add for matching numbers. A complete set, a single numbered example and a unique charity piece should be compared on their own terms. If a set has to be split, ask the valuer to explain the likely effect rather than assuming that three individual estimates simply add up to the same outcome.

Primary auction records

What Vagabondage watches are worth

The available evidence does not support one “high six figures to seven figures” band for every Vagabondage. These two platinum III examples show why the exact lot, date and currency should remain visible. Neither is a current offer or a forecast for another watch.

Two historical sales are useful reference points, not a sufficient sample for a blanket present-day valuation. A written report should seek further relevant closed comparables, explain any difference in condition or set, and say when the evidence is thin. It should not fill a missing result with an asking price.

The brand price list gives wider context, while the owner’s value guide explains the evidence and fee basis. A quote for I Gold or a jewelry version needs its own comparison; neither follows automatically from a standard platinum III result.

Before buying or selling

Five checks for a Vagabondage

  1. Edition and calibre. Establish I, II, III or I Gold, including 1504.2 for the later gold release. The case shape alone does not identify the edition.
  2. Metal and numbering. Record the full limited-series number and distinguish plain and jewelry executions. Confirm any claimed matching set across all its documents.
  3. Display operation. Have the appropriate wandering or jumping display checked professionally. A short demonstration does not establish internal condition.
  4. Originality and service. Review dial, hands, case edges, clasp and service records. An unsigned dial can be correct; unexplained replacements still matter.
  5. Sale evidence and completion. Compare the same edition and metal, verify ownership, and agree inspection, insurance, fees and release terms in writing.

The authentication guide separates authenticity, originality, condition and ownership. For a sale, request the expected net proceeds by route. For a purchase, a private sourcing brief should state whether a single watch or a matching set is required.

Questions answered

Vagabondage FAQ

What is the difference between Vagabondage I, II and III?

I uses a wandering hour aperture whose position shows the minutes. II displays digital hours and minutes. III displays digital hours and seconds, with a central minute hand. All use mechanical hand-wound movements.

How many Vagabondage III were made?

The standard series is 69 platinum and 68 in 6N gold. The manufacturer also records 10 platinum jewelry versions; these should be distinguished from the standard numbered editions.

Why is there no F.P. Journe name on the Vagabondage dial?

The unsigned dial is a deliberate feature of the series. Its absence alone is not evidence of a counterfeit; reference, movement, documents and physical inspection still matter.

Was Vagabondage I launched in 2004 or 2006?

The manufacturer’s 2022 retrospective dates it to 2004, while an older Vagabondage III archive describes the first series launch as 2006. This guide records both rather than using a disputed year as a pass or fail test.

What is special about Vagabondage I Gold?

The 2022 gold edition revisits the first display with an updated hand-wound calibre 1504.2 and completes the gold trilogy. It should not be treated as the original platinum I with only a different case metal.

Do matching numbers guarantee a higher price?

No fixed premium is established here. A matching set requires evidence across each watch and its documents. Its value should be assessed against relevant set and individual sales, with any evidence gaps disclosed.

About this guide

Passion Asset Advisory is a mandate-led private office for collectors selling significant watches, including F.P. Journe; it holds no general dealer inventory, with a disclosed collector-watch principal purchase as the only exception.

Passion Asset Advisory publishes this guide and offers the separate advisory and transaction services linked here. We are not an authorized F.P. Journe dealer and are not affiliated with the manufacturer. Sources appear beside the relevant specifications and price evidence. Historical estimates retain their stated dates; an editorial update does not turn them into current sold prices.
