Passion Asset Advisory separates selected handbag auction sales from jewellery-purse valuations. Jane Birkin’s original sold for €8,582,500 at Sotheby’s Paris on 10 July 2025, including reported premiums. Mouawad’s US$3.8 million purse is a stated valuation, not an established sale. Compare the named object, native currency, date and price basis before using either figure.

Which expensive handbags have documented auction sales?
These cases compare a unique personal artefact, an exceptional production Kelly and a designer-owned Chanel. Keeping the native currencies avoids presenting a modern currency conversion as the original sale price.

The Chanel figure uses the auction house article’s stated hammer-price basis; the other two rows use premium-inclusive results. These are selected historical transactions, not current quotations or seller proceeds. No modern currency conversion is used to create a ranking.
Why does the €8.5825 million original Birkin stand apart?
Sotheby’s identified the original Birkin as the most valuable handbag sold at auction in July 2025. Its result is approximately US$10.1 million at the house’s published conversion. The exceptional link to Jane Birkin is the central distinction; this was not an ordinary bag chosen for its skin or hardware. What does the HK$4 million Kelly show?
The Christie’s lot catalogue identifies a 2021 matte white Himalaya Niloticus crocodile Kelly 28 with diamond-set 18k white-gold hardware. It specifies 229 diamonds totalling 9.2 carats. The contemporaneous release reports HK$4 million and calls it a handbag auction record at the time.

A non-Hermès auction example: Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel tote
Sotheby’s sold Lagerfeld’s personal embossed-lambskin tote in its estate sale. The catalogue identifies his photo entry pass and a Paris-Bombay show tag. The house’s January 2022 article described the €94,500 result as a Chanel record. That is an attributed historical claim, not evidence that no Chanel bag has sold for more since.
A designer-owned object and a retail Chanel bag answer different collector briefs. We do not turn the estate result into a general Chanel resale range or claim it establishes the highest non-Hermès result across all brands.
Mouawad’s US$3.8 million purse: a valuation, not a disclosed sale
Mouawad’s record page describes the 1001 Nights Diamond Purse at US$3.8 million and dates its Guinness certificate to 23 November 2010. The maker lists 4,517 diamonds totalling 381.92 carats in an 18k gold purse. Those specifications explain why it belongs in a jewellery comparison as well as a handbag discussion.
The page does not identify a completed sale at US$3.8 million. We therefore do not insert it into the sold-results table. The same rule applies to a launch price, dealer listing or promotional valuation for any other one-off purse.
How should a collector use these records?
Ask five questions: what exact object sold, when, where, in which currency, and whether the figure includes buyer’s premium. Then read the condition report and provenance. A public sale result is evidence for that object, not proof that another example will achieve it.

Why do some handbag lists show higher prices than auction records?
They may mix maker valuations, launch prices, dealer asking prices and closed sales. A quoted value only becomes evidence of a transaction when the source identifies a completed sale and its price basis. Buyer’s premium, tax and currency conversions can also change the headline number.
Do diamond handbags contain hundreds of carats?
